Architecture and development of large scale content ingestion and secure search system currently at over 650 million documents and growing. During this project, customized and tuned Solr to scale beyond 1 billion documents with full per-user to document rights management; built XQuery based high-throughput document ingestion system; and created high scale match/merge technology backed by custom partitioned blob store and distributed query engine. Also revolutionized the REST-style API by designing a command-system to offload UI developers from needing to maintain state or carry search business-logic in their code.

Contract CTO for AbeBooks, the worlds largest marketplace for books with over 100 million books and over 13,500 suppliers. Led the technical teams from a stuck position at less than 30 million inventory items with no scalability to a fully open-ended scalability model. Also focused on internal security, IT infrastructure, agile processes, and overall system architecture.

Built, positioned, launched, and managed (as Editor in Chief) the Zend Developer Zone, a community site for PHP developers. Technology used included PHP, Zend Framework, Lucene (PHP), Smarty, MySQL and Linux.

Restructured the core team and designed the infrastructure and processes for the Zend Framework open-source project as interim project lead. Also developed the phpBlox component model and IDE prototype for bringing VB style development to PHP. The Zend Framework has over 30 core members, over 300 total contributors including corporate members such as Google and IBM; and a download rate in the millions.
